Vices and Virtues

Hey class, sorry for the delay. I might be coming down with a cold so I've been on the DL from life. I think I'm getting better? We'll see.

Anyhow, this is your homework!

Project 4: Vices & Virtues

You will be assigned a vice and its corresponding virtue from the list below. You are to create two corresponding posters which exemplify them. Each poster will feature multiple figures (no fewer than two per each) acting out their vice or virtue. The posters will also prominently feature a creature, object, or entity designed to be a physical manifestation of the vice or virtue itself. Carefully consider the acting in your human characters, and the symbolic representation of the vice or virtue itself. While there is an element of fantasy involved in the imagery here, I would ask that you try to shoot for something both unexpected and tasteful (try to avoid fantasy novel demons, or comic book monsters if possible). You will also be required design type which will be the Latin names for your vice and virtue and will also be featured prominently in each poster. These will be in color and the finals will be printed at A2 size (16.5”x23.4”).
This is a two week project. The first week will be a crit of very advanced color sketches. The second week you must bring your final pieces printed to size.

      7 Vices:

Pride-Superbia
Envy-Invidia
Wrath-Ira
Sloth-Acedia
Avarice-Avaritia
Gluttony-Gula
Lust-Luxuria

7 Virtues:

7) Chastity-Castitas
6) Temperance-Temperare
5) Charity-Caritas
4) Diligence-Industria
3) Patience-Patientia
2) Kindness-Humanitas
1) Humility-Humilitas

You have your assigned vices and virtues.

Just remember, you don't want to just illustrate something you don't care, or as Dan called it, obsessed. Make it interesting, fun, something that's going to make your gazillion print price worth paying for.

So here are some inspiration that can hopefully help you out!

I noticed many of you had chairs in your sketch.
The chair can be made up, but don't make it obvious! Use references on how figures sit on chairs, or get inspired by different kinds of chairs to help your vice/virtue's characteristics.
If you like these chairs, I found them in this awesome website called This is Glamorous. Check it out!

Honestly I have no idea where I got this image from, but this is something I thought for Gluttony.
